DWS system
Track and trace for parcel delivery
As part of the modernization of five of its sites in Norway, DB-Schenker implemented a new DWS system that increases the reading rate, increases throughput and reduces manual work steps.
Hanter Ingenjörsteknik is a global supplier of pneumatic hose systems and solutions for conveyor technology based in Gånghester, Sweden. For many years, the company has worked as an integrator for DB Schenker, providing conveyor systems and other solutions using sensors from its long-standing partner Sick.
DB Schenker uses a DWS (Dimensioning-Weighing-Scanning) system for incorrectly declared shipments at each of its logistics terminals. In addition to the weight and dimensions of the parcels, the system also provides sorting information about the delivery location as well as important data for the recalculation of incorrectly declared shipments. When DB Schenker approached Hanter with the request to make its DWS system more standardized, reliable and precise, the advantages of working with Sick in terms of the quality of the solutions and customer service became clear.
As part of the upgrade of the DWS systems at the five Norwegian sites, each system received the latest generation of the Lector85x matrix camera for capturing barcodes from above, from the front and from the side. Each system was also upgraded with two laser measuring heads and a dynamic scale. The Lector85x matrix camera enables high read rates for all sizes and types of 1D and 2D barcodes for package identification. The large field of view of the cameras also made it possible to solve the application with fewer cameras, leading to a more cost-effective result. DB Schenker and Hanter were impressed by the system's performance and small footprint.
High read rates, rarely manual intervention
The high reading rates of the new cameras ensure that hardly any manual intervention is required. The calibrated measurement and weighing allows undeclared revenue to be recorded. In addition, the after-sales support provided by Sick's service technicians offers a high degree of planning security. Hanter also appreciates Sick's high level of flexibility. Although the sites had different requirements in terms of capacity and supply voltage, Sick was able to develop a solution that met all requirements. Sick provided similar system specifications for all five plants in Norway, which ensures a higher availability of spare parts and simplifies the training of personnel in the maintenance and servicing of the DWS systems.
For many years, Sick and Hanter have been working intensively to continuously improve the sorting systems in Hanter's range using sensor solutions. The resulting trust also led to Hanter taking Sick along to direct talks at DB Schenker. DB Schenker also benefits from the expertise of its partner, the fast and reliable response in both the pre- and after-sales area and the "One System Fits All" approach. "We hope that this project is one of many others that we can tackle together with strong partners such as Hanter and DB Schenker," says Sebastian Lang, Project Management and Service Factory & Logistic Automation at Sick in Sweden.
