Visualizing highly dynamic laser processes with thermography

Lasers are extremely versatile tools in industry and manufacturing technology. Their flexibility makes them a key technology for implementing the goals of Industry 4.0. Although laser cutting and welding are now considered turnkey technologies, there is still a considerable need for research and development in the majority of laser applications, e.g. joining hybrid material pairings, 3D printing or ultrashort pulse processing.

Visualizing highly dynamic laser processes with thermography

Laser processes are highly dynamic, thermally induced processes and cannot be seen with the naked eye. High-speed visual cameras, which are often used, cannot visualize the heat flow in the component. However, this is necessary for a complete understanding of the process. Contact temperature measurement of the moving molten material is not possible. In addition, the processing zone should remain free of influences from the test system. This is exactly what thermal imaging cameras do, offering high image frequencies and geometric resolutions at the same time.

The non-contact and non-reactive temperature measurement allows heat flows in components to be mapped in order to gain a complete understanding of the process. The thermal imaging camera precisely controls the heating and cooling of the materials to be processed. Defined energy inputs are monitored and the thermal load is reduced. Precise thermal control of the process thanks to high-speed data acquisition, high geometric resolution and delay-free triggering ensures seamless recording, documentation and evaluation of temperature distributions to determine the optimum energy input by the laser.
