Safe sealing of the battery is mandatory

In the field of e-mobility, permanent sealing of the battery is essential to protect the vehicle from excessive heat and the escape of chemicals in the event of a battery fault.

State-of-the-art technical plastic solutions are in demand here, which are particularly resilient in terms of temperature resistance. Pöppelmann K-Tech, which specializes in the development and series production of technical plastic solutions, now has an efficient solution for components with very high sealing and temperature requirements thanks to the injection moulding processing of two-component liquid silicone rubbers (LSR). The process offers a reliable, high-quality and cost-effective solution, especially for particularly complex and demanding applications such as battery technology. The plastics specialist will be showcasing its capabilities in the field of e-mobility with a cell holder for the Power Tube and an e-bike battery, among other things. This is characterized by maximum precision. Its flame-retardant material ensures safety when the battery heats up.

LSR: Tightness at maximum temperatures

With the new material implemented by Pöppelmann K-Tech, silicone is first injected with the hard component (thermoplastic) in a 2-component injection molding process, after which the soft component LSR is injected. The 2-component LSR technology makes it possible to overmold different materials in one process, reliably and fully automatically. No further assembly steps are required. Depending on the material pairing, a chemical adhesive bond can be achieved between the hard and soft components in addition to the sealing function. The fully automatic, single-stage process saves time and is particularly cost-effective for large quantities.

Advantageous properties for e-mobility applications

The LSR exhibits excellent properties in compression set tests and is characterized by good resistance to weathering, ageing and UV radiation as well as being odourless. It enables reliable sealing with high tolerances. The 2K-LSR technology is particularly interesting for the automotive industry, as the solutions produced with it offer reliable protection against moisture, chemicals and high and low temperatures. It is also suitable for industries and sectors such as electronics, electrics, energy, household, transportation, medicine & cosmetics and more.
