Production, machine tools and robots

Annina Schopen,

Synergy of safety and efficiency

The use of mobile robotics in industry plays a central role in inspection and maintenance tasks in plants as well as in occupational safety. As is to be expected, the rapid development will continue to increase in the coming years. The flexible application possibilities range from inspection and safety monitoring on large construction sites, production facilities and tunnels to extensive warehouses.

Robot technology enables the automation of processes and offers many advantages: service robots operate continuously around the clock, register processes that go beyond human capabilities and collect relevant data that can be used for various tasks, such as predictive maintenance work. Robots detect problems in production facilities at an early stage and can therefore prevent downtime, which contributes to greater overall efficiency. By operating autonomously in environments that pose a potential danger to human operators, mobile robots can also increase safety in the workplace.

Beyond human perception

Whether potential accidents at work, theft or industrial espionage - there are many potential sources of danger in industrial environments. In times of staff shortages, service robots provide valuable support for security personnel in these scenarios by using sensor technology to record more data than would be possible with human perception. One example of an industrial application is the RB-Watcher from Robotnik Automation, a subsidiary of the United Robotics Group.

This wheel-driven, mobile robot is used for both stationary monitoring and mobile inspection. It has been specially designed for outdoor use and can overcome obstacles up to a height of 10 centimetres. With protection class IP54, its housing is resistant to dust and spray mist. This makes it suitable for checking and monitoring substations, warehouses and other safety-relevant areas - around the clock. The RB-Watcher follows predefined routes and transmits real-time data. If a problem is detected - such as unauthorized persons, a fire or a defective fence - an immediate warning message is sent.

Seamless monitoring around the clock

An RTK GPS system and a 3D laser scanner enable the robot to navigate precisely and perform its tasks reliably. Its flexible navigation algorithm adapts dynamically to changes in the environment. This allows the robot to react autonomously to previously unknown objects and select alternative routes.

The machine is equipped with many other technological components, including AI software modules, a forward-facing depth camera and a bispectral PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera with 30x optical zoom and a thermography function. This enables smooth remote control via network access if the situation requires it.

Whether it's unwanted intruders or overheating machines, the robot reports potential incidents immediately. It can make targeted speeches via integrated loudspeakers and, thanks to a microphone, LED lighting and night vision equipment, it can make itself heard in any situation so that security personnel can react via the robot and do not have to rush to the scene of the incident.

Robots are also useful for predictive maintenance. Thermographic images can be used to detect possible defects in transformers or deviating temperature trends in systems - as well as leaks in gas tanks. Robotics is proving to be a particularly valuable solution for small and medium-sized companies without a permanent security service. By ensuring safety in production facilities through a combination of security personnel and smart mobile robots, major damage can often be avoided in various scenarios.

An RB-Watcher is currently being used successfully in a 9,000 square meter logistics center. It monitors doors, windows and security systems from the inside and outside. If necessary, it can not only keep an eye on the respective areas with sensors, cameras and other motion detectors, but also check whether doors and windows are accurately closed and all security systems such as alarm systems are working properly.

Comprehensive security concepts

Mobile robotics optimizes industrial safety by meeting the demand for precision and reliability thanks to advanced algorithms and by bringing together the specific advantages of man and machine. This approach makes the best possible use of the synergies of human-robot collaboration.
