For large and small robots
Brakes ensure greater safety
Where automation is involved, it must be ensured that even in the event of a control or power failure, unintentional movement sequences do not result in hazards or damage. The aim is to protect employees from injury and capital goods from destruction. This is where electromagnetic brakes from Kendrion come into play.
Electromagnetic safety brakes are suitable for various applications due to their different functional principles, sizes and performance classes. Kendrion shows that spring-applied or permanent-magnet brakes can be used to implement a suitable solution for practically any task in robotics and intralogistics, such as driverless transport systems and industrial trucks, or in wind power systems and medical devices. The requirements can vary considerably. While large industrial robots tend to require high braking torques, collaborative robots require the smallest possible dimensions and the lowest possible weight. For this reason, the various brake series are continuously optimized for the different areas of application so that suitable solutions can be found for extreme environmental conditions or applications where the brakes need to operate as quietly as possible.
Brakes for large and small robots
Robots are as varied as the tasks they perform. This is why there is usually no off-the-shelf solution for safety brakes for the various sizes, designs and loads. Users often have high requirements, for example in terms of space requirements, the service life of the components used or the ambient conditions. Kendrion has been active in the robotics market for many years and today has the right brake solution in its range for almost all robot models, tailored to the installation space, holding force, service life or temperature range, for large industrial robots as well as for small articulated arm, delta or collaborative robots. The brake specialists provide advice on technical issues, help with the selection or develop application-specific solutions for special tasks. Short communication channels ensure rapid results.
In addition to the permanent magnet brake series "High Torque", which is well suited for high torques and backlash-free solutions on large industrial robots, a practical solution has also been developed with the Servo Line series. It is based on the spring pressure principle, delivers high braking performance and is very durable. Thanks to the possibility of producing the friction pairing with different types of lining, the spring-applied brakes can be designed individually and specifically for the application. Typical areas of use include robots and applications in medical technology, such as tripods or X-ray arches.
Slim format for space-critical applications
The Servo Slim Line series is an example of spring-applied brakes that are ideally suited to smaller robots or electrically powered vehicles: they are designed for cobots or automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for smaller payloads, for example, but can also be used in other applications that require small geometric dimensions. The "slim" single-disc brakes are flatter and lighter than the market standard in terms of their power density and are well suited for hollow shaft drives thanks to their large internal diameters. A new addition to this brake model is size 12 as a logical and consistent series extension for higher torque requirements. In addition, the series has been extended by the type 502 in two sizes. With this version, the user has the option of installing the driver on both sides, thus further reducing the overall height.
The spring-applied brakes in the Intorq BFK series are ideal for high loads where installation space is limited, for example in the material handling sector. Over the last few years, Kendrion has further expanded the brake series for these applications. Their extremely compact design makes them suitable for many other intralogistics tasks, as certain series are encapsulated and therefore protected against dust and splash water.
Application-specific solutions
Where standard solutions are not an option, Kendrion offers the user suitable application-specific solutions. Such applications can be found in robotics, intralogistics, but also in mobile applications such as AGVs, AMR and autonomous industrial trucks and wherever electromagnetic safety brakes are needed. When validating and verifying the brakes, the user can rely on the brake specialist's competent laboratory. The laboratory is equipped with testing devices for the measuring range from 0.01 to 10,000 Nm. All measurement data is recorded under various operating conditions such as temperature, friction work, speed and direction of rotation and used for the technical data. These options make it possible to provide well-founded technical data. The appropriate accessories are also included, for example compact control modules that reduce the holding current of the brakes. They reduce the energy requirement and consequently also the heat development. Applications in which cooling is difficult because the motor, gearbox and brakes are mounted in a confined space benefit from this in particular.
