Planar motor system
Floating movers with six degrees of freedom
XPlanar from Beckhoff opens up new paths in system design. It is based on free-floating planar movers positioned above any number of planar tiles. This allows flexible, precise and highly dynamic positioning to be achieved.
For mechanical engineers, this results in more freedom and simplification when designing machines and systems. The XPlanar system combines the individual arrangement of planar tiles with multi-dimensional positioning of the planar movers hovering above them. The movers can be moved in two dimensions without jerking or contact at speeds of up to 4 m/s, 2 g acceleration and 50 μm positioning repeatability. The movement is noiseless and without abrasion.
The scalable planar motor system can significantly simplify the design of machines and systems. Thanks to the highly flexible mover positioning and high movement dynamics, product flows can be divided easily and individually, for example, and robots or other less flexible mechanical devices that were previously necessary can be replaced. The contactless process also eliminates wear, emissions and the carry-over of contaminants.
Flexible and versatile movement functions
The system is based on 240 x 240 mm planar tiles that can be arranged in any geometry. These contain the entire electronics and EtherCAT G communication. A freely selectable number of planar movers float above them thanks to integrated permanent magnets. The movers can be used not only horizontally, but also vertically and even upside down. There is a choice of four different planar mover types in sizes from 95 mm x 95 mm and a payload of 0.4 kg to 275 x 275 mm and up to 6 kg payload.
The two-dimensional X/Y positioning of the movers is supplemented by additional movement functions:
- Lifting and lowering by up to 5 mm, optionally with weighing function
- Tilting by up to 5° for transporting and handling liquids
- Rotation of up to ±15° or up to 360° using special planar tiles
The synchronized, collision-free movement of several movers and automatic path optimisation are further features provided by the TwinCAT automation software. For example, the maximum payload can be increased by moving several movers in combination.
XPlanar is suitable for use as a flexible transport system in all areas of mechanical engineering, particularly for the automation of packaging, assembly, sorting and picking processes. The free choice of surfaces - easy-to-clean glass, stainless steel in hygienic design or plastic film - also supports use in cleanrooms, in the pharmaceutical and food industries and under vacuum conditions.
