Engelberger Robotics Award 2018 goes to Esben Østergaard
Esben Østergaard, CTO of Universal Robots, has been honored with the Engelberger Robotics Award 2018. With his invention of the collaborative robotic arm, he has initiated a paradigm shift in robotics.
At Automatica 2018, the American Robotic Industry Association, or RIA for short, honored Esben Østergaard from Universal Robots with the Engelberger Robotics Award 2018. Østergaard played a key role in the development of Universal Robots' collaborative robot arms and triggered a paradigm shift in robotics with his invention. For Jeff Burnstein, President of RIA, Østergaard is a visionary who redefined robotics: "Esben Østergaard's work has made it possible for robots to work in applications and industries that were previously considered unthinkable. His focus on the collaborative aspect has aroused immense interest, especially among small and medium-sized companies that had not even considered robotics in the past. In a world that is now increasingly characterized by collaboration between humans and robots, Esben's groundbreaking technological advances play a central role," says Burnstein.
Østergaard was delighted with the award: "I am deeply honored to win the prize named after Joseph Engelberger. Engelberger revolutionized industrial manufacturing with robotics. Like Universal Robots, he believed that a robot should be able to handle a wide range of tasks in a factory. I am a great admirer of his work."
With its cobots, Universal Robots has become a global market leader in the field of collaborative robots. The company holds a 58 percent share of all cobots sold worldwide.
The Engelberger Robotics Award is named after Joseph F. Engelberger, who is considered the "father of robotics". Engelberger was the founder and president of Unimation, the world's first manufacturer of industrial robots. Since 1977, the Engelberger Robotics Awards have been presented for outstanding achievements in technology development, application, education and leadership in the robotics industry, recognizing outstanding individuals from around the world.
