Events such as the Covid-19 pandemic highlight the resilience required in the logistics industry today to maintain supply chains and delivery promises. Companies are also facing a number of challenges to meet customer expectations for faster delivery of an ever-increasing range of goods. This includes the demand for flexible and fast direct sales to consumers. In addition, there are only a limited number of qualified specialists available on the labor market and in many areas repetitive, physically demanding work processes still predominate, making this occupational field unattractive for new employees.

A wide range of requirements in terms of speed, flexibility, variety and precision can hardly be met today without the use of automation solutions. Robots relieve the burden on human employees in logistics and packaging, while improving process quality and efficiency and performing repetitive tasks with high precision, speed and repeatability. Coupled with state-of-the-art software solutions, robotics enables logistics companies to master the growing complexity of their supply chains. State-of-the-art solutions based on artificial intelligence provide profound insights into complex supply chains and help to remain competitive in the midst of an increasingly volatile market.

FlexBuffer from ABB enables efficient handling of smaller batch sizes, mixed pallets and individual customer orders, thereby supporting faster and more efficient order processing in e-commerce. The total payload of the FlexBuffer robot is 50 kilograms. The solution is able to store up to 600 transport containers and perform sequencing with up to 500 cycles per hour. This makes the FlexBuffer solution ideal for flexible and cost-effective processing of customer orders and enables rapid scaling of operational processes.
